For the 30 seconds I considered doing not all clarinet works, my thought process was “uhhh, Shaw’s Partita, maybe a Kevin Puts piece…..why can’t I have any opera!?!?!?”

Well, I’m kinda grateful for the excuse to not have had to dive into this properly, but the immediate ones to mind for me were Kaminsky’s As One, Heggie’s Moby-Dick, and Jimmy López Bellido’s Bel Canto. I’d want to have another go round with Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up In My Bones to really solidify my thoughts on that but it’s possible I’d include that…I was very impressed by it on first viewing, but as I didn’t care for Champion (which I saw later), it’s possible I just liked FSUIMB for the novelty.

In general, I’m a big fan of López, and am sad he didn’t appear on anyone’s list. I would’ve probably included him in mine but I can’t actually find a recording of El Viaje, his clarinet trio from 2000…so I haven’t heard it. If anyone can point me in the right direction…

And no, I’m not getting into the discussion of whether the year 2000 is 21st century or not.

Extremely fun NTT this week, seemingly a 20th century violin concerto by someone familiar with the, let's say, "alla zingara" manner... I don't know if these composers even have violin concerti but I'll bucket Enescu, Wieniawski (well, I would be very surprised if he didn't have a violin concerto), and Kodaly. And since I recently heard a violin/cello duo featuring an "alla zingara" movement by this composer, I'll invoke First Mate right to add one extra composer, Erwin Schulhoff.
