Dear Tone Prose Readers:
In just under two weeks, we’ll publish the one hundredth edition of the Tone Prose newsletter, and in the spirit of doing something celebratory, I thought we might take a page from the recent New York Times 100 Best Books of the 21st Century list.
The Times asked a variety of literary luminaries for their list of the ten best books of the century so far, and these were tallied and the list of the top books was assembled. I don’t know exactly how we’ll go about making a list, but I definitely have a list of my favorite 10 concert pieces of the 21st century, and I’d very much like to see your recommendations (even if you don’t have 10.)
So that we’re comparing like for like, let’s limit this to concert works. That is to say, pieces intended for concert performance, i.e. no operas, film scores, musicals, etc. (I have one or two pieces in mind that will flirt with subverting this rule, so feel free to make special pleadings.)
Other than that, have at it! I can’t wait to see what you suggest, either via email to toneprose@substack.com or in the comments of this post.
